IMPROVISING MUSIC THROUGH A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH
Music has been identified as one of the few activities with the ability to stimulate many areas of our brain and body, simultaneously. Improvisation emphasises this effect requesting that an action is made here and now and with “good taste”. However, this is not enough: the incredible power of music improvisation offers even more benefits when combined with a multidisciplinary approach, as the fascinating abstract nature of music becomes harmonic when combined with physical movements and genuine emotional actions. Helicona proposes courses of improvisation based on music which is linked with theatre, dance, fencing and horse-riding. The participants are given the opportunity to gradually experiment in a mindful environment, aiding each individual to ask new questions and find creative answers.

- A MULTIDISCIPLINARY HISTORICAL approach (dance-theatre-fencing-dressage-gesture-rhetoric)
Exercises and suggestions from different historical disciplines help to give sense and form to our improvisation, involving and engaging our complete body in finding solutions with “good taste”, experiencing and understanding the history of the expressive codes in communication (Rhetoric).
- A Balanced and Gradual PEDAGOGY (rational-emotional)
Mistakes are welcome, fear is led by the hand, and gradual steps are proposed in order to understand how to balance both emotional and rational decisions.
- Development of the SENSORIAL AREAS (action-reaction)
Listening and being aware are the first steps to understand how to react. Exercises in this area help to develop prompt answers using all the senses.
- Development of INTER-RELATIONALS (matching-pacing-leading)
This develops a sense of connection to what we do in the context of interrelations with other musicians, the audience, space, time, and with style.
- Development of the COGNITIVE AREA (mental GPS)
Exercises in this area place the information that we gather from all disciplines into a coherent space-time system, perceiving and embodying the proportions, the timing and the effort of a musical gesture.
