"I don't look at the world in the same way anymore!"
This is feedback that often recurs among those who attend the INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF IMPROVISATION, and it is what honors us the most and constitutes our best advertisement!
But what does LEARNING TO IMPROVISE mean?
First of all, it is the opportunity to learn to express yourself freely but also to seek Good Taste, without fear, and while having fun.
If you like big words and philosophical concepts, this means:
- Finding the balance between FORM and CONTENT
- Developing DIVERGENT and creative THINKING, as opposed to the normal tendency towards convergent thinking
- Being aware of EXPRESSIVE CODES, which are the common tools we have at our disposal and which we need to open the doors to the INVISIBLE, i.e. the world of relationships, emotions and empathic communication.
We do all this with a HISTORICAL and MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH.
This means immersing ourselves in a hypothetical Renaissance Academy, with its performance practices and formulas, to return to understanding how our energy shapes our desire to communicate with others.
And IMPROVISATION is the best tool for doing this work!
We have been doing this for 10 years (11 if you count the year of COVID), and we are proud to continue offering a truly UNIQUE course!
Here's how it works:
MORNING: everyone does everything: warm-up activities, Renaissance aesthetics, multidisciplinary activities (HORSE RIDING, FENCING, DANCE, THEATRE)
AFTERNOON: everyone does their own thing: musicians make music, actors (and singers) perform theatre, fencers fence, dancers dance, horsemen ride.
LATE AFTERNOON: everyone sings together, creating CONTRAPUNCTAL MUSIC (à la Renaissance).
EVENING: various activities including a free evening in VERONA.
17th EVENING: GRAND SHOW combining all the work done during the week.
And on the weekend of the 18th and 19th: IMPRO PARTY, an improvisation party with a special guest, open to all old friends of Helicona and all improvisation enthusiasts.
Principal courses:
Improvisation for voice, melodic and harmonic instruments - Davide Monti / Maria Christina Cleary
The course consists of a gradual progression in which participants will be given the tools to understand and experiment with improvisation strategies.
Cantare super Librum (Contrappunto alla mente) - Antoine Schneider
The course aims to help students approach the practice of Renaissance contrapuntal improvisation, between consonance and dissonance.
Rhetoric and Gesture - Francesca Gualandri
The course aims to illustrate the relationship between physical movement and musical movement and to explain the symbolic references that underlie both.
Horse riding - Serena Bove
The course offers an opportunity to experience initial contact with horses and, once a relationship has been established, the chance to tune into their gaits by improvising pieces that can accompany basic choreography.
Fencing - Fabrizio Orsini
The course offers an opportunity to understand and experience how much the mentality and responsiveness of a fencer can influence musical improvisation.
Theatre - Adrian Schvarzstein
The course is an opportunity to experience the connection between the content of theatrical communication and the influence of verbal language in musical communication.
Dance - Bernd Niedecken
The course is an opportunity to understand and experience the real connection between the form of dance and musical composition, from spheres to geometry and figurative music.

Enjoy a carefree evening with Martina's games
All interested parties (local choirs, musicians, amateurs) are invited to participate in an evening of Improvised Singing (CONTRAPPUNTO ALLA MENTE)
Final Concert 17/7 - Everyone
We will bring together the efforts of the group work in a show on the mythological theme of the Labyrinth
And then:
IMPRO-PARTY - weekend 18-19/7 with a special guest

Accommodation and meals:
- It is possible to book accommodation at the OASI SAN GIACOMO facility, which has an agreement with the project.
- The OASI SAN GIACOMO facility will also provide meals at a special price.
- The special rate is €80 full board (accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner) per person per day.
- Those who do not require accommodation are asked to eat at the affiliated facility.
The course will be held in English and Italian.
